Im not going to recap the whole Scott Sisters situation, as I am sure you are aware of it. If not, check out African American Pundit and the Final Call’s article online entitled Locked Down, Exploited and Mistreated . Basically, Gov. Haley Barbour in Mississippi signed orders suspending the prison terms of Jamie and Gladys Scott after a long campaign of online petitions, blogs,Facebook pages and Internet radio programs rallied support for the sisters’ release.
Heres my thing with the Scott Sisters. For 16 years tehy had been incarcerated over $11. The NAACP has come forward trying to claim that they had been trying to get the sisters out.
The sisters were both given extraordinary double life sentences, even though they had never had a previous criminal record. The judge of their trial, Judge Marcus Gordon, had a history of racially biased rulings, including granting bail to the KKK murderer of the three civil rights workers. And even though these sisters are out of prison, THEY ARE STILL SUBJECT TO LIFE ON PAROLE!!!!!!!
There was no action on the part of civil rights groups, action networks, and small local groups including the god-damned white-founded NAACP, who tried to claim the credit for these sisters release. They cant claim any kind of credit, nor can anybody else. This Governor’s move was purely political and FINANCIAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The system didnt want to pay for the necessary kidney transplant for one of the sisters, and told them that they would be released under the conditions that one sister donate one of her kidney’s to the other.
Props to Nancy Lockhart of the the Rainbow/Push Coalition to standing at the forefront Where was the Nation of Islam? The NGE? The Moors? In New York State there are at least eight former Black Panthers still in jail, some of them since the early 1970s. What is the New Black Panther Party doing to set their own political prisoners free? WTF?
How many more heinous cases like this exist? Thousands? If we are going to fight on the justice front, we have to ask ourselves that question, make efforts to uncover more cases like this, and get these brothas and sistas out WHILE ALSO PREVENTING FUTURE CASES LIKE THESE. We already know thanks to Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness that mass incarceration is a tactic actively being used against Blacks in America.
How much longer before we collectively start raising hell?! How much longer must we allow war to be waged on Blacks in America before we fight back?
