Noble Drew Ali and the Moorish Science Temple

Prophet Noble Drew Ali and the Moorish Science Temple of America’s contribution to Blacks in America is as important as that of any great black leader in American history. At a time when many American “negroes” still bore fresh memories of plantation life, Noble Drew Ali revealed to them the glories of the accomplishments of their ancestry.

Early Life

Not much is known about the Prophet Noble Drew Ali prior to the establishment of his first temple. Born as Timothy Drew in 1886, he purportedly traveled to Egypt early in life as a child where he was exposed to a lost section of the Islamic holy book known as the “Circle Seven Koran”. It was later shown that Noble Drew Ali actually plagiarized the scripture from the Aquarian Gospel and a Rosicrucian secret society text called Unto Thee I Grant to compose this new “sacred text”. Upon Noble Drew Ali’s return to America at the age of 26, he founded his first temple in 1913 in Newark, New Jersey. However, due to police persecution and concern over his racial messages, he was forced to migrate around the Midwest region – setting up temples along the way- before finally settling in Chicago and establishing a ninth temple in 1925. By then, the Moorish Science Temple’s membership had swelled to nearly 30,000 members. By 1928, those numbers had tripled.

Teachings of the Moorish Science Temple

While the Moorish Science Temple of America can claim to be America’s oldest known Islamic organization, “Moorish Science” is certainly not the Islam that predominates from Morocco to Malaysia, but a mixture of Indian beliefs, the occult, Freemasonry, and Christianity. Instead of the Qu’ran of Muhammad which is familiar to all, the Moorish Science Temple has its own Qu’ran, called the Circle Seven Koran (available in the “download” section above). The spirituality behind this Koran and Moorish Science exposes practitioners to a whole network of alternative spiritualities that focused on the power of the individual to bring about personal transformation through mystical knowledge of the divine within.

Where are the other colors as nationals in law around the world? There is no one eles calling them self a color as a nation. So anyone calling them self black has voluntarily made himself “property” to be abused legaly, in law. So stop it. In treatys where is [the term] black? Nowhere. But we, the Moors, are known in the oldest treaty in the world – the Moroccan treatys. No debate.

Noble Drew Ali’s Legacy to Black Consciousness

images Noble Drew Ali and the Moorish Science Temple

It was thanks to Noble Drew Ali that one of his contemporaries named Marcus Garvey was led to write “Islam is the religion of the black man in America.” One of Noble Drew Ali’s students, David Ford-el (later known as W.D. Fard Muhammad) was a minister in the MSTA Chicago Temple and went on to found the Nation of Islam after Noble Ali’s death in 1929. In 1976 Jeff Fort, leader of Chicago’s Black P Stone Nation gang, was influenced by Noble Drew Ali’s legacy while incarcerated and changed the organization into the “Moorish Science Temple, El Rukn tribe”.

Were it not for Noble Drew Ali’s teachings, there most likely would not be a Nation of Islam, nor would there be as potent an interest in the true origins and glory of pre-colonial African empire.

Today, the Moorish Science Temple of America is a religious non-profit Corporation that claims temples and membership in 15 U.S. states and throughout the world. While most Africans and Arabs abroad remain ignorant of Noble Drew Ali’s contributions here in America, his legacy remains an important and indelible part of Black consciousness in America today.

In conclusion, I urge you to remember there is work enough for all to do in helping to build a better world. The problems of life are largely social and economic. In a profound sense, they are moral and spiritual. Have lofty conceptions of your duties to your country and fellowman in general and especially those with whom you deal. This includes such honesty and righteousness as will cause you to put yourself in the others fellow’s place. Look for the best in others and give them the best that is in you. Have a deeper appreciation for womanhood. Brighten the hopes of our youth in order that their courage be increased to dare and do wondrous things. Adhere at all times to the principles of love, truth, peace, freedom, and justice.

I am your affectionate leader. I shall continue to labor, day and night, both in public and private, for your good, thereby contributing to the welfare of our country and its people as a whole.

There is much confusion in these days, even among the different National Moorish Science Temples as to the true teachings and intentions of the Prophet Noble Drew Ali and his works. Probably a few million African-Americans prefer Moorish teachings, but will not participate to any extent due to the infighting and lack of meaningful engagement in the communities. Likewise, this writer, having retired from active membership, authored ‘ Moorish America’s Archival Palladium ‘, in a sincere effort to share some of the wisdom gleaned over 35 years from the Prophet’s teachings.

Honors for reaching out. How can those of us who want to learn more about the teachings in their true form cut through all the infighting and get to the real intent?

We wrote the book ‘ Moorish America’s Archival Palladium ‘ for that purpose, addressed specifically to the African-American family, but not limited in it’s intent, it attempts to help build a solid, basic understanding of the Noble Drew Ali’s Moorish Science.  The second book ‘ Light of Ali ‘, is some of the philosophy lifted from the Palladium, less the racial  and historical matters that pertain to Black America’s unique past. One should after reading these materials, see clearly why The Prophet was murdered, his sincere teachings abandoned, and why the organization under attack even today. But the original teachings remain intact and as effective as ever !!! archival palladium’s Facebook page offers some additional information.

Hey I’ve got an idea; why don’t we make up a bizarre racist religion based upon fantasy and fairy tales and see if anyone is ignoranrt enough to but into it for $73.00 a month… Oops! it has already happened.

Seriously, do some research of this scam before you put your eggs in this basket. I suspect that if you do read up on the history of this fantasy belief system you will go somewhere else for enlightenment.

I appreciate the comment. I dont agree with everything ANY religion does, and its important to remember that even Christianity in its reverent position as one of the leading religions of the world was CONCEPTUALIZED from fantasy and older African traditions. No religion is verifiable and indisputably true and perfect. Look into what the Moors are doing and extract some value. Feel free to discard the “extra”. Peace! Keep the comments coming.

You are right Arlene, it’s commonly called Christianity in this country, though it has little if anything to do with Christ. It is a bizarre story of a pale, blond hair blue eyed European god, in a land of 100-120 degree temperatures. A religion built, not on love or truth, even as Christ teaches, but on self proclaimed superiority, hate, murder and discrimination. One can always tell when those who love darkness see light, they attack people that are not bothering them, because their make believe world is threatened. When and wherever our people do anything not sanctioned by some whiteness crazed , racially blind, and crippled person, here they come. Arlene, please buy a calendar, this happens to be 2012, not 1712,and ALL PEOPLE in America are free to BE what they choose, and to worship God according to the dictates of their OWN conscious, NOT YOURS !!! Sorry, but I have no hate to share with you !

Man this sort of thing makes folk laugh at us. Folk read this silly stuff and thinks we’re all ignorant. Put away them silly hats and give something to the world besides ignorance.

The only people NOT laughing at the Moors are the courts. They realize these scholars are on to something and are quickly moving to change the laws in response. Hats aside, theres something of value amongst the Moors that we can all learn from and apply to our collective effort of Black consciousness.

It should also be said that there are individuals in every religious faith and in very respectable uniforms who do not take care of their children or pay their bills. I make it a point not to down anyone’s way of life and learn from all for the purpose of Black liberation and progress.

Peace, and I appreciate the comment!
