Is it contradictory for “Christians” to be celebrating a holiday like Halloween? Are you caving into societal pressure by letting your kids dress like demons and knock on strangers’ doors to beg for chemically engineered “treats”?
We already know that holidays have become platforms for corporate profiteering (North American almanacs of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century give no indication that Halloween was recognized as a holiday…today, Halloween is one of the most profitable holidays in the world. Americans spent over $5.07 billion in the year 2009 alone! See: Halloween commercialized, oversold) but somebody tell me that they can see the dangers of letting ourselves and our children participate in these pseudo-spiritual holidays!
If you dont know what you are “celebrating”, you should devote some time to critical thinking and research: The Grio published an article a few days ago under the title “Black Christians often lack Halloween spirit”. In it, the article briefly touches on the origins of the holiday as a white Gaelic pagan festival ( known as Samhain) where people and their livestock would often walk between two bonfires as a cleansing ritual, and the bones of slaughtered livestock were cast into its flames. The Gaelic custom of wearing costumes and masks was an attempt to copy the evil spirits or ward them off.
Any self-respecting Black Man or woman that prances around in a Gaelic celebration and imitated evil spirits in the name of “having a good time” is a fool.
