The Hitler-Marcus Garvey Paradigm

Most of us see Marcus Garvey as a founding father of Pan-Africanism and a Black Moses, but he would have rather be seen as a Black Hitler. There’s a lot that says Marcus Garvey structured the United Negro Improvement Association after Hitler’s Nazi Party. Even his speaking style was modeled after Hitlers. Listen to this short clip from one of Garvey’s speeches here:

The first public reference that we have proving Marcus Garvey’s affinity for Hitler’s form of Nationalism can be found in a speech he gave in 1923. He said;

“we who believe in race purity believe that the White race should protect itself against racial contamination, and the Negro should do the same.” In 1924, he added that “the United Negro Improvement Association believes in the purity of the Negro race and the purity of the white race” and advocated “Africa for the Africans” based upon the same nationalistic concept of Europe for the Europeans.

Later, in March 1934, Garvey recommended that his readers peruse Mein Kampf – Hitlers memoirs – and expressed his hope that one day the Black race would produce its own Hitler.” He wrote the following disturbing words, “Hitler has a lesson to teach and he is teaching it well.”

Hitler Garvey Post 300x186 The Hitler Marcus Garvey Paradigm

Early on, Garvey praised the Ku Klux Klan’s intention of making America a White man’s country, and Hitlers efforts in Europe. In July 1922, he publicly said:

“From impressions, from my observations, from my understanding, the Ku Klux Klan is a mighty white organization in the United States of America, organized for the purpose of upholding white supremacy in this country; organized for the purpose of making America a white man’s country, pure and simple. The organization has absolutely no apology to make as far as its program is concerned – a program of making America a white man’s country. Whilst the Ku Klux Klan desires to make America absolutely a white man’s country, the Universal Negro Improvement Association wants to make Africa absolutely a Black man’s country.”

Did Garvey and other Black Men and Women of the time not know about the NATIVE AMERICAN GENOCIDE that came before White America?

While we can be sure that Marcus Garvey looked up to men like Ethiopia’s Haile Selassie, Kenya’s Jomo Kenyatta, and Samory Toure in Ancient Mali, we also know that he idealized men like Hitler, Napoleon and Mussolini.

Marcus Garvey went so far as to arrange a meeting with Edward Y. Clarke, then the leader of the Ku Klux Klan – a move that would hurt the leader’s popularity for decades. The KKK was at its height, ramapaging through Black neighborhoods raping, lynching, and murdering. Marcus Garvey’s meeting was seen not only as contradictory for a Pan-Africanist – but treasonous to the Black Power movement of his day. Marcus Garvey was making a deal with the devil at the expense of the masses that he led. Of the meeting, he said;

“I regard the Klan, the Anglo-Saxon clubs and White American societies, as far as the Negro is concerned, as better friends of the race than all other groups of hypocritical whites put together. I like honesty and fair play. You may call me a Klansman if you will, but, potentially, every white man is a Klansman, as far as the Negro in competition with whites socially, economically and politically is concerned, and there is no use lying about.”

On one hand, we can believe that Marcus Garvey wanted the same level of power, pride and organization that he saw in Hitler’s Nazis and the KKK. On the other hand, it could be that his response to the racism and violence that white organizations used was to retaliate with Black racism and violence. But, such an attitude did not uplift the Pan-African movement; it completely undermined the credibility of it instead.

So Whats the Verdict on Marcus Garvey?

I GarveyRidingInCar 320 235x300 The Hitler Marcus Garvey Paradigm

The United Negro Improvement Association was a beautiful thing, and Marcus Garvey was a spectacular leader and Black Man. But what of his sleeping with the enemy? Does this change how the leader should be viewed? Was Marcus Garvey right – that the races should remain separate and “pure” – or should we work with the white race for the good of our cause (a question I previously posed here)?

President Ronald Reagan said, "if you negotiate from a position of weakness, you can only get what the other side is giving." Until we consolidate our resources social, economic, political, and educational and present a united front we will always negotiate from a position of weakness, which means we will always get only what the white man is giving today. I think we should study their techniques at power development and build strong institutions to uplift our people. Mr Garvey had one of the strongest Black organizations in the world, so before we criticize him let's look at the success.

    • Leon

Exactly! Thanks a lot Cincyfresh. Its Easy for us as African Americans to moralize now that we are no longer facing lynch mobs and overt and expressed racism. Hitler at the time wasn't the mass murdering psychopath that history reveals him to be today. He was at the time simply a nationalistic and socially driven politician that came from nothing, poor education, no monetary background, nothing. Why wouldn't a man like Garvey see similarities? Regardless of race.

    • Erik

@Cincyfresh, Hitler had a really big organization to, don't think though we would like to look at his successes before we criticize him. The world has become a very small place with all the air-travel, international trade and internet. Resources become increasingly less available.. Lots of people don't have access to the benefits of economic and technological development. These inequalities have an historic and systemic nature. Examples of consequences of current problems are:

Strangling loans to African countries, corrupt governments and multinational organizations buying up natural resources as if they were oranges on the market. This needs to change and we need a movement that has the will and the power to create these changes. This movement though needs to be based on a way more sound ideology. Marcus Garvey's ridiculous nationalistic racist views are not fit for the future..

It's just plain stupid to ever line up with an enemy.

  • Leon

Lol he wasn't lining up with any enemy. He understood unlike most of the African Americans today that there were no race relations between white and black citizens at the time, only a war between one race and the other. And in war the opposing side, at times, must sit across from one another and discuss a way from which the war could end. Garvey was articulating to the people who thought he was an uncivilized prime ape that he possessed the intellectual capacity to negotiate and strategize. He didn't sell his race out. He more than anyone else has paved a living model of what elements a mass movement of minorities in this country have to possess. I think this article however insightful miss represents the true motives of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey.

    • Carl

Realy? And how did that work out for him? If you choose to focus on what was, that's your choice. But if he succeeded we would see monuments to his legacy today. There are none. That whole logic of trying to prove to the white man that you are not the animal they portray you to be is just plain stupid. Keep in mind, we have a Black president right now. But they still choose to portray him as some kind of dumb animal. I still say sitting down with those people is stupid. History has proven that repeatedly.

      • Leon

I was simply speaking on Garvey's intent. You're right, history shows that black people have failed in attempting to make themselves equal to other races but that does not mean we should give up in our attempt/intent to do so. Marcus Garvey was a man before his time. He pushed for autonomy rather than inclusion and he used the resources he had at his disposal to achieve that aim. Sure he didn't secure his name in racist American textbooks or inspire the racist American government officials to commission sculptures and monuments in his honor but I don't think that those are fair marker from which to measure his success. No person in America today can call themselves a leader of the Black community without borrowing the legitimacy that Marcus Garvey won for them. You might not consider that an accomplishment when you look back and analyze history but I and many others do.

It is not really about trying to prove anything. It is about being in the real world. There are only three choices: negotiate a truce form a position of equality(Garvey's atrempt), fight until you are virtually destroyed(Native American route) or give up and settle for whatever is given to you(our current path).

In later years, Garvey condemned Hitler for persecuting the Jews during the holocaust. Here is evidence to back up my claim “While Garvey promulgated prejudicial theories about Jewish culture in the lessons from the School of African Philosophy and elsewhere, he also expressed contrary views, at times harshly criticizing racial discrimination against Jews. In 1933 he directly linked the Jewish reputation for business acumen with German anti-Semitism. He strongly denounced discrimination against Jews as a minority group and ascribed anti-Jewish prejudice to racism motivated by jealousy of Jewish economic success. "The Jewish race is a noble one," he wrote in a 28 March 1933 New Jamaican editorial, and "the Jew is only persecuted because he has certain qualities of progress that other people have not learnt." He then drew a direct analogy between the persecution of Jews and the prejudice directed against black people in the United States, and strongly denounced Nazi racial intolerance. He specifically denounced Hitler's and Mussolini's designs on African colonies, and linked Nazi prejudice against black people with the persecution of Jews, describing both as racist policies that presented dangerous ramifications for world affairs“.

Race-mixing destroys both genetic lines. A child born in the United States to one African-American parent, while the other is Caucasian, can point to neither Europe or Africa as a context of heritage. Now, can I as a White American point to exactly Ireland, Germany or Spain with any certainty? No. But I can narrow the lines of latitude and longitude with relative confidence.

Some might argue that this isn't important and dive into the multicultural tide, largely masked by such travails as "School", "Work", "Friends" and "Occasions", but if one looks down the paths of fate and eternity, one must ask if they're willing to throw away the ancestral line that gave us Egypt any more willingly than I am to forsake the Parthenon?

  • http://www.nsm88.org/ ThorOdinson14

Anyone daring to openly express his or her desire that one's ancestral line not vanish into the sands of time or be swept away in a sea of multiculturalism, with all of its inherent potential for conflict, risks being deemed a "hate monger". Humanity as a whole is too evolved to settle for such an over-simplified treatise.

Nobody considers it "Fascist" or "Intolerant" that Japan only prints billboards and road signs in Japanese and places severe restrictions on non-Japanese immigration. Nobody considers it "Racist" that the Orthodox Jewish Community insists that Jews should marry Jews.

Does anybody consider the Great Wall of China to be a symbol of racial intolerance? No; it's considered to be one of the great engineering marvels of the ancient world and yet its very purpose was to secure China's borders from foreign invasion. Yet anybody who takes a firm stance in favor of securing our border with Mexico runs the risk of being labeled a "racist".

    • Yonah El

Thor, you really are a card. The problem with America is it really doesn't belong to anyone. Virtually everyone here came here from somewhere else. The idea that now, those who took this land from the indians (who by the way are still here) can determine who can and cannot be admitted creates a problem. In addition to which, as a result of immigration, we are a nation of nationalities. No one will tell the Japanese that they should not be Japanese, but here in America, which nation of Americans will be the focal point of homogeneity? Indians, African Americans?, which nation of white people? The British, the Germans, the Irish, Swedish, The Italians, the Russians, or the Latinos, from puerto Rico, or mexico, or spain? What about the Chinese, everyone is here. This is a melting pot and the demographics are changing so rapidly that if you choose homogeneity you may as well move out of this country and back to the country of your ancestors. You have no right any more than anyone else to say who stays and who goes. Even if you limit it to those who are already here. If you question the point, look at what is happening to the republicans and the tea party. People in this country have to learn to live together, or we are headed for another civil war. Be honest Thor, do you really think this country can endure another civil war? Do you really think we could have all out civil war in this country at this time in history without forfeiting this country to our overt enemies who live outside this country. Thor, it really doesn't matter any more about who came from where? It is important as far as history is concerned, but as far as the future is concerned….Join the program, or you will be a part of demise of this country. No one has greater right to revolt in this country than the blacks for the slavery they endured, but we chose the path of freedom and loyalty to this country in spite of the wrongs we have suffered. I don't know what wrongs you have suffered, but I am historically certain that it was not near what we suffered. IT isn't securing the border with Mexico that makes people think "Racist" it is the fact that all we have to do is make it illegal to hire anyone who isn't a citizen and send the employers to jail. That would end the problem and we would not have to waste time talking about the border between the US and Mexico. They send the mexicans home and let the employers go free that is what is racist.

Blacks of that and of this age have no responsibility to the Indian, so that shouldn't have been a consideration in regards to if Garvey involved himself with the Klan or not. I don't believe Garvey was analogous to Hitler nor do I find your connections to be well vetted. It is well known that the Nazis got many of their ideas on race from the American South. The Deep South was founded by whites from the West Indians (Englishmen) who migrated from the Bahamas to New England. Jamaica being controlled by similar people, Garvey like many Blacks likely got there ideas on racial purity growing up under that culture.

  • http://methodmecca.com Zakiya

I think its important to note where all these movements were at the time. Garvey supported Haile Selassie of Ethiopia UNTIL the war with Mussolini. So that is misleading in the article. After that he was highly critical of him.

Was Hitler a war monger during these days?
