Life After Farrakhan: Who Will Be the Next Leader of the NOI?

Say what you will about the Nation of Islam, but it is one of the largest and most successful Black organizations in the country. The success of the Nation of Islam can be attributed to one man: Louis Farrakhan.

After we published last week’s article on the Rise of a Black Messiah, a reader suggested that whoever led the Nation of Islam after Farrakhan would be that messiah. The subject of Minister Louis Farrakhan’s successor has been given very little attention (in part due to his resilience and longevity – the minister celebrated his 80th birthday on May 11).

So who will be the successor to Minister Louis Farrakhan, and how will a regime change affect the direction of the Nation of Islam?

The Muhammad and Farrakhan family have relied on family members from their bloodline to function in key positions for organizational ministers, officers, and other positions established by the Nation of Islam “Provisional Constitution”. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that these three most likely contenders all come from the “royal priesthood” of either the Muhammad or Farrakhan family.

Ishmael Muhammad

Life After Farrakhan: Who Will Be the Next Leader of the NOI?

The National Assistant Minister to Minister Louis Farrakhan for nearly two decades, Minister Ishmael Muhammad has long been in the public spotlight. He is a prominent writer, a gifted orator, and as charismatic a leader as any other within the nation. As the son of the Late Founder Elijah Muhammad, he has

According to NewsOne Media, “prior to being requested by Farrakhan to assist at the organization’s Chicago headquarters, the eloquent and professorial Ishmael resided and studied in Cuernavaca, Mexico for 17 years where he focused on Quranic and Biblical scriptures. The husband and father of seven children speaks fluent Spanish and has traveled extensively throughout five continents.

Given his bilingual fluency, his internationalist perspective, and the NOI’s more inclusive approach-instead of being groomed to eventually fill Farrakhan’s shoes-it appears the Assistant Minister is being prepped to don a different style of footwear altogether.”

Minister Ishmael Muhammad’s ascent would mean a more transparent and mainstream Nation of Islam. In this Final Call interview, he was quoted as saying “My preference would have been to work behind the scenes and to help better organize the nation so we could be more effective in our programs and outreach to the community. ” With his ties to the Latin American community, the Nation of Islam could also see more of a focus on Hispanic outreach.

Student Minister Abdul Hafeez Muhammad

Student Minister Life After Farrakhan: Who Will Be the Next Leader of the NOI?

Known affectionately as “The People’s Pastor”, Student Minster Abdul Hafeez Muhammad (formerly known as Kevin Muhammad)has been in numerous newspapers (4Korners, Daily Challenge, Caribbean Times, Christian Times, Final Call, Amsterdam News as well as daily newspapers).

He has appeared as a guest on various radio stations and TV programs such as: WBLS, WLIB, WBAI, WWRL, POWER105.1, WRKS KISSFM, MNN, BRONXNET, BCAT, NY1, SATELLITE RADIO and a cross section of other minority radio, TV and newspapers outlets. He is the New York Representative of Minister Louis Farrakhan in Mosque No. 7 in Harlem.

Student Minster Abdul Hafeez Muhammad served as Co-chair of the city wide Local Organizing Committee (L.O.C.) for the Million Man March in 1995, mediated and arbitrated between rap artist 50 cent and Ja-Rule in 2003, and has a long track record of being a man with good character and integrity.

The post that he currently holds is a high one, and his ascent could mean a far more moderate Nation of Islam.

Supreme Captain Mustapha Farrakhan

mustafa farrakhan Life After Farrakhan: Who Will Be the Next Leader of the NOI?

Minister Louis Farrakhan has 9 children: Mustapha, Joshua, Louis Farrakhan Jr, Donna, Maria, Betsy-Jean, Fatimah, Khallada and Abnar Farrakhan. Of these 9 children, his sons Louis Farrakhan Jr and Abnar remain unlikely successors to their father, as neither possess the moral bearing or leadership abilities that are possessed by Minister Louis Farrakhan.

Louis Farrakhan Jr was arrested in 2001 for assaulting his pregnant wife with a serving tray. Nasir has always relied on the financial support of his father and the Nation, and had never been employed up until his late 40s. He was also arrested for charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, driving with a suspended license, leaving the scene of personal injury accident and possession of drug paraphernalia. To his credit, Nasir was also one of the few people that helped his father rebuild the Nation of Islam in the late 1970s, and has long been one of his father’s right-hand men.

Of all of Louis Farrakhan’s sons, Mustapha Farrakhan is the most likely candidate.

Mustapha Farrakhan is a police officer and the Supreme Captain of the Nation of Islam and has a background in law enforcement. Captain Mustapha has managed to avoid the public spotlight to a large extent, but we can only assume based on his position that there will be very little change to the organization as a whole. Just as the change of command between Khalid Abdul Muhammad and Malik Zulu Shabazz in the New Black Panther Party didnt produce too many ripples, neither do we believe a change in command between Minister Louis Farrakhan and his son will lead to a radically different NOI.

Love it or hate it, the Nation of Islam, and its charismatic leader Louis Farrakhan is an integral part of our collective identity here in North America. The next leader will either bring credit to the Nation, or chaos.

What are your thoughts?

I personally think it will be Mustapha. I know many will see it as nepotism, and to a degree it is. But I think Lois would love to pass the torch and allow his son to follow in his footsteps. If not him,it'll probably be Ishmael. I've seen that guy alongside Farrakhan for years. Ishmael probably feels he's put in his time and deserves the position. We'll have to wait and see what happens.

It's amazing how time flies and I never thought that I would have to entertain this question but the fact of the matter is that no one lives forever and our brilliant Brother Minister Louis Farrakhan has proved his mettle throughout the years with decades of service to the world and will be hard to find anyone with such a conviction and commitment in our midst other than those who have come up beside him in the Nation.

Your choices are the logical pick and it will be one of them. I am glad that they all possess the rhythm of the Minister from their years of proven service and to me when that day comes it will be a very emotional time for me because I too have followed the teachings of the Minister over the years and whoever is deemed to take over will have a mighty influence over the masses who follow.

I am 100% percent sure that the best decision will be made without ego and false pride being an issue!

Keep up the great work! Loved the article!

    Peace & Righteous Love Always,

Lance! Its an honor to see you in the comments section (from a long time fan)! I appreciate the high words, and for as much as I love the Minister and his style, I have no doubt that his choice will be just as charismatic and interesting. Thanks again, and keep doing your thing on LanceScurv.com!

You think Farrakhan would elect a woman as the successor? I wouldnt see that coming!

    Peace,

The Nation is set up to be run by a council after Farrakhan steps down as leader. There may be a head or spokesperson for the council, which already is in place, but there will not need to be any supreme leader.

The stage is set to go to a council of 12 or 24.

    • http://unitedblackamerica.com Asad

I appreciate that! Thats a very intelligent means of ensuring continuity of the Nation without beef. How did you come into that info?

  • http://www.tha144000.com/ Sharif Ali

I remember a few years ago when the Minister was experiencing health problems the media jumped on it and acted like he was about to die (same way they are treating coverage of Hugo Chavez's cancer treatment). Different media outlets were reporting as if the Minister stepping down would cause problems over who would be his successor.

A brother who has been in the Nation for years informed me about the council and how the Nation of Islam has been structured for years to be run by the council versus having a central power figure after Farrakhan steps down.

It makes sense, especially if you listen to what Elijah Muhammad's intentions were and listen to what his son (and top candidate) has to say about successors to Farrakhan.

    In the New York Times:

Ishmael Muhammad has sometimes been named as a possible successor to Mr. Farrakhan, as have a couple of Mr. Farrakhan’s sons, but none of them enjoy the same wide following as the departing leader.

But Ishmael Muhammad responds that the era of charismatic leaders is over — that one main goal of the Nation is teaching people to be self-sufficient, particularly in their relationship to God.

Courtesy of the "Muhammad Speaks" newspaper of February 4th, 1974

Question: Have you designated a successor for yourself?

Messenger: I do not do that. I cannot do that. I did not choose myself. God chose me and if He wants a successor, He will Choose that one.

Question: By what means would someone come up?

Messenger: I do not know that, because I do not believe there is one coming up. The work that I am doing, I don't think God needs one, because when man and God have come face to face, as the old saying goes, then that is the end of it. When we are face to face with God, that is the end of it and so what would another one do? There is nothing for him to do.

Question: After you are gone, Mr. Muhammad, the Nation of Islam will continue to exist, but how?

Messenger: It will be a New Islam to what the Old Orthodox Islam is today. It will be all together a new one.

Question: You mean your successor will reside over a new Islam?

Messenger:There will be no Successor. There is no need for a successor when a man has got the divine truth and has brought you face to face with God.

Question: How will your resources be administered?

Messenger: That will be carried on by the Nation, after setting up the Nation on the right way or right path to take care of themselves. They do not need any more instructions on that. They will follow it as the Constitution of America has been followed.

How 'bout LRH and the Church of Scientology?

“Movie Book” Gives Blow by Blow Account of Major Events in the Life of Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam

New York, NY, June 08, 2012 –(PR.com)– In her new book, Farrakhan, The Movie, journalist Leila Wills chronicles the life of controversial Minister Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam (NOI). Dynamic characters and little known details portray the intense history of the group since its formation in 1930 to its current partnership with the Church of Scientology (COS).

The book gives readers a play-by-play account of the harrowing days leading up to the assassination of Malcolm X. It goes inside meetings held by Elijah Muhammad and his instructions to his officials and followers. The story covers the rise of Louis Farrakhan into mainstream black leadership and the heavy infiltration of the group by government agencies.

The book also covers the modern day NOI and the shocking announcement made by Farrakhan in 2009 where he revealed “a marriage” between the Nation of Islam and the Church of Scientology. The eighty-two year-old NOI has been historically critical of integrated groups such as, the NAACP and the Urban League, and this “marriage” with the COS has been highly contentious, both inside and outside the group. There are accusations of Farrakhan abandoning the separatist and apocalyptic teachings of Elijah Muhammad and indoctrinating his followers with the systems of L. Ron Hubbard whose group endeavors to “clear the planet.” Some say this merger marks the end of the oldest, independent black organization in the United States.

Farrakhan, 79, has made auditing, the central practice of Scientology, a requirement for all NOI officials or would-be officials. Since his announcement, over one thousand NOI members have become "Certified Hubbard Dianetics Auditors." The group has designated a National Auditing Captain and has set-up various “org boards” modeled after the COS. According to auditing.org, the COS defines auditors as, “Scientology ministers or ministers-in-training.”

Author Leila Wills says, “Members inside say they don’t do Scientology, they only do Dianetics. Bewildered members, now on the outside, say this is like singing in the choir but not believing in the bible. No matter which side is right, this marks a drastic change in the Nation of Islam and the book dramatizes this major move along with many others.”

Farrakhan, The Movie recaptures significant moments in the NOI in a fast-paced run-down of history. The book was published on May 29, 2012 and is now available on Amazon.com as an eBook or paperback. The website for the book is – http://www.farrakhanmovie.com.

Leila Wills has worked for several media companies in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. She was a member of the Nation of Islam in the early nineties and her personal experience coupled with years of research brings this extraordinary story to life. In 2002, she first met with Minister Farrakhan on the project. Since then, she has consulted him several times. In 2012, he decided not to personally contribute.

BY HER MOST HIGH EXCELLENCE & SUPREME GODDESS OF THE UNIVERSE, SOVEREIGN DEFENDRESS OF THE FAITH, HER ROYAL MAJESTY & CROWN MONARCHESS, QUEEN MISSHAKI MUHAMMAD OF THE LOST-FOUND NATION OF ISLAM. MOTHER OF ALL LIVING CIVILIZATION. CREME OF THE PLANET EARTH. HER SOVEREIGN RULE EXTENDS WHERESOEVER SHE SETS FOOT, FOR THE EARTH BELONGS TO ALLAH AND ALL THAT IS CONTAINED THEREIN.
    AS-SALAAM-ALAIKUM:
The Lost-Found Nation of Islam was established through Master W.D. Fard Muhammad, God in Person, to whom all praises are due forever. He came from the East. He came ALONE to find that which was Lost, and is now Found. He raised His Last & Greatest Messenger, Moses, who appeared in the person of The Most Elijah Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him), Our Spiritual Mother Mary of the Book and, in turn gave birth to a (spiritual) son.
For the past 35 years, Minister Farrakhan has REFUSED TO UNITE with The Most Hon. Silis Muhammad, who also has part of The Lost-Found Nation of Islam. Whoever The Successor to Min. Farrakhan is, that man has A MAJOR DECISION to make. That decision entails THE TOTAL UNITY of The Nation. We have two (2) years, the EXACT DAY BEING UNKNOWN, before the Mother Plane executes its mission TO DESTROY AMERICA, which means that we who believe in the techings of The Most Hon. Elijah Muhammad (PBUH) must LEAVE HERE, or BE DESTROYED WITH THE OPEN ENEMIES OF THE BLACK MAN, WOMAN & CHILD. The Successor has a GREAT RESPONSIBILITY to the People in which he MUST NOT FAIL. Many LIVES ARE AT STAKE. The Successor must choose UNITY or DESTRUCTION. There is no alternative.
I am Your Brother In Truth,
