THE DESTRUCTION OF THE TASMANIAN ABORIGINES

To many, the mention of Tasmania evokes humorous recollections of the Tasmanian devil–the voracious marsupial popularized in American cartoons. Tasmania is an island slightly larger in size than West Virginia, and is located two-hundred miles off Australia’s southeast coast. The aboriginal inhabitants of the island were Black people who probably went there by crossing an ancient land bridge that connected Tasmania to the continent of Australia.

Indeed, given the long and well-documented history of carnage, cruelty, savagery, and the monstrous pain, suffering, and inhumanity Europeans have inflicted upon Black people in general, and the Black people of Tasmania in particular, one could argue that they themselves, the White settlers of Tasmania, far more than the ravenous beast portrayed in American cartoons, have been the real Tasmanian devil.

The Black aborigines of Tasmania were marked by tightly curled hair with skin complexions ranging from black to reddish-brown. They were relatively short in stature with little body fat. They were the indigenous people of Tasmania and their arrival there began at least 35,000 years ago. With the passage of time, the gradual rising of the sea level submerged the Australian-Tasmanian land bridge and the Black aborigines of Tasmania experienced more than 10,000 years of solitude and physical isolation from the rest of the world–the longest period of isolation in human history.

It is our great misfortune that the Black people of Tasmania bequeathed no written histories. We do not know that they called themselves or what they named their land. All we really have are minute fragments, bits of evidence, and the records and documents of Europeans who began coming to the island in 1642.

THE BLACK FAMILY IN TASMANIA

The Tasmanian aborigines were hunter-gatherers with an exceptionally basic technology. The Tasmanians made only a few types of simple stone and wooden tools. They lacked agriculture, livestock, pottery, and bows and arrows.

The Black family in Tasmania was a highly organized one–its form and substance directed by custom. A man joined with a woman in marriage and formed a social partnership with her. It would appear that such marriages were usually designed by the parents–but this is something about which very little is actually known. The married couple seems to have remained together throughout the course of their lives, and only in rare cases did a man have more than one wife at the same time. Their children were not only well cared for, but were treated with great affection. Elders were cared for by the the family, and children were kept at the breast for longer than is usual in child care among Europeans.

THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF THE BLACKS

The isolation of Tasmania’s Black aborigines ended in 1642 with the arrival and intrusion of the first Europeans. Abel Jansen Tasman, the Dutch navigator after whom the island is named, anchored off the Tasmanian coast in early December, 1642. Tasman named the island Van Diemen’s land, after Anthony Van Diemen–the governor-general of the Dutch East India Company. The island continued to be called Van Diemen’s Land until 1855.

On March 5, 1772, a French expedition led by Nicholas Marion du Fresne landed on the island. Within a few hours his sailors had shot several Aborigines. On January 28, 1777, the British landed on the island. Following coastal New South Wales in Australia, Tasmania was established as a British convict settlement in 1803. These convicts had been harshly traumatized and were exceptionally brutal. In addition to soldiers, administrators, and missionaries, eventually more than 65,000 men and women convicts were settled in Tasmania. A glaringly inefficient penal system allowed such convicts to escape into the Tasmanian hinterland where they exercised the full measure of their blood-lust and brutality upon the island’s Black occupants. According to social historian Clive Turnbull, the activities of these criminals would soon include the “shooting, bashing out brains, burning alive, and slaughter of Aborigines for dogs’ meat.”

Ok, its fixed! Thanks for pointing it out, and if you or anyone else encounters a problem, let me know and I will get on it!

      • Rafael

Thank you for fixing it! What can i say? It's a great article of yours, I've read about the Tasmanian genocide before but not with so many details, white people have a real devilish/psychopathic behaviour. I'll try to translate it(and many other articles) and share with my group on facebook, thank you again and your site is great.

On the photo they look just like Pygmies of African rainforest.

Yes, white man's behavior was [and largely remains] quite abnormal/psychopatic. However, another thing shell be taken to account. We in Bharath (India, as moderns call it) believe in Law of Cause an Effect. If today you kill someone who is weaker, tomorrow someone who is stronger will kill you.. Most aboriginal people were hunters – even though in most places of tropical countries where they lived there was no paucity of wild fruits/roots/tubers! So in Tasmania, for example, long before white people came, local aboriginals were a true "Tasmanian devils" for local populations of wild animals, whom they used to hunt: just place yourself for a moment into situation of helpless fish, deer/seal etc.. (whatever helpless animals tasmanians used to kill)..

Well, it was just a different and a new perspective for you boys :)

I'm vegetarian by the way. So are my friends. "Help ever hurt never", as our Teacher says.

    • SD

So for you killing a fish to feed one's child is just like killing a human being for fun???? May be you should not even eat plants as they also contain spirits. By the way, being a vegetarian doesnt automatically mean that you are a good person.

  • Derrick

Just because kill animals, doesn't mean they should be extinct from the face of the earth, in The holy Quran, and in the Bible its say's in many scriptures that often time they would eat the meat of animals like the lamb or even sacrafice one in many examples, there's no justification for these actions.

    • http://www.sai-alex.ucoz.ru Sai-Laxman

But, first of all, I don't want to JUSTIFY white men. (I agreed that their behavior is psychopatic, didn't I?).. It is a next question: what shell happen to those white men who abused black men? I personally believe here the same Law of Karma (or Cause-and-affect – law) is in play. Just the question is: which higher power will punish white men for their past ugly acts against black/indigenous/aboriginal peoples of our planet.. Well, the answer is with me: it can be any form of big power – from natural disasters to nuclear bombs etc..

Secondly, there are many typos/mistakes in modern versions of holy books to which you point, because they were writen and many times re-written. For example God prohibits in modern version of Bible eating meat with blood, while original version was His prohibition to eat "bodies with blood", that means – all animals. Only fruits/vegetables were allowed by God.. But if you want to believe in different opinions I will not argue with you. My own experience and intuition teach me good lesson about food.. Food influences mind just like drugs influence it.. After eating meat/fish/eggs person has not very pure thoughts.. You need considerable personal experience to judge about diet.. But again I will never argue.. It's your free choice. God gives man freedom to chose between different acts. (But no freedom to escape from consequences of these acts :)

According to this site – http://www.sydneyline.com/Pygmies%20Extinction.ht… – the photo you are using is of a tribe for North Queensland. I don't know about the accuracy of that site, but if you have concern about the accuracy of your own page, you might want to investigate.

The photo was taken from the book featured, entitled The Destruction of the Tasmanian Aborigine. I believe it was used to illustrate the physiological similarities between the two groups to identify them both as being of common heritage. Good observation!
